LISBON — Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres has reportedly made his transfer intentions clear this summer, favouring a move to Arsenal over rivals Manchester United — a decision that could shape the Premier League’s attacking landscape next season.
According to The Guardian, representatives of the 27-year-old Sporting CP forward have informed United that their client has no interest in joining the club, despite his prior working relationship with Red Devils boss Rúben Amorim. Gyökeres, instead, is said to view a switch to Arsenal as a “dream” move — motivated in part by the Gunners’ return to Champions League football.
His one-word response to being asked about Arsenal? “Dream.”
The north London club, who narrowly missed out on the Premier League title last season, are believed to be on the lookout for a prolific No.9 to lead their line. And Gyökeres, who scored 39 goals in the 2024/25 Portuguese top flight and helped Sporting secure a domestic double, ticks all the right boxes.
Sky Sports earlier reported that Manchester United had made initial contact over a potential deal, banking on the forward’s ties with Amorim, who coached him during Sporting’s dominant campaign. But those efforts appear to have fallen flat.
Despite speculation about a gentleman’s agreement allowing Gyökeres to leave Sporting for £58.5 million (€70m), club president Frederico Varandas struck a firm tone in a midweek interview, denying any promise of a discounted exit.
“I never made that commitment,” Varandas stated. “If a club wants Viktor, they must pay the full clause.”
That clause stands at £84 million (€100m) — a steep figure, but not out of reach for Arsenal, particularly if they offload fringe players this summer.
Gyökeres’ stock has skyrocketed since his move from Coventry City in 2023. The powerful Swede has bagged 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting across all competitions — form that has made him one of Europe’s most coveted forwards.
Arsenal’s interest in Gyökeres comes as the club considers alternatives to Benjamin Šeško, who recently signed a contract extension with RB Leipzig. It also adds intrigue to the Gunners’ broader recruitment strategy, which could include a new midfielder and winger, as they prepare for another title push.
While no official bid has been confirmed by Arsenal, the signals are becoming increasingly clear: Viktor Gyökeres has eyes only for the Emirates.
