Coastal leaders back Ruto ahead of 2027 general elections

KILIFI — Top political leaders from Kenya’s Coast region have pledged full support for President William Ruto’s 2027 re-election bid, crediting his administration with delivering development and economic support to local communities.

Speaking during the funeral of Mzee Gideon Baya Mung’aro, father of Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro, the leaders praised the President’s performance and warned against divisive politics.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi said President Ruto’s policies are improving the lives of ordinary citizens. “The programs President Ruto has brought are reaching the hearts of Kenyans. His political enemies are unsettled. Mr. President, stay the course,” Kingi said.

Kingi urged fellow leaders from the region to avoid betrayal and political opportunism. “Let us not abandon what we’ve built for temporary gains. We know the value of supporting President Ruto. As Coast leaders, we are behind him because of the impact he’s made,” he added.

Cabinet Secretary for Mining and Maritime Affairs Hassan Joho echoed that message. He declared the region’s unified political stance, noting the Coast’s ambition to produce a future national leader.

“The Coast is organized. We’re not fighting other people’s wars. We support President Ruto without hesitation. And we also have our own vision for the future one day, a president from this region,” Joho stated.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya took aim at recent protests in Nairobi and other cities, warning that political figures were misleading young people for selfish agendas.

“There are people using the youth to cause chaos. These young people must know that the same politicians inciting them have already secured their own futures. They’re being used,” Mvurya said.

Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro emphasized that local leaders are focused on development and not political squabbles. “Our interest is in improving the lives of our people,” he said.

Members of Parliament from Kilifi North and Kilifi South also backed the President. Owen Baya said Ruto has stood with the region. “If there is a president who has been a friend to Kilifi, it is William Ruto. In 2027, we are with him even if others protest.”

Kenneth Chonga, the Kilifi South MP, stressed that Coast residents do not seek conflict. “Better the devil you know than the angel you don’t. Political battles have started elsewhere, but we from the Coast have no quarrel with you, President Ruto,” he said.

In response, President Ruto assured the region of continued investment, including efforts to improve electricity access and resolve land ownership issues that have long affected coastal communities.

The Coast region’s endorsement comes as political momentum for the 2027 election begins to build across the country. Ruto’s administration has been focusing on grassroots economic programs and infrastructure projects, particularly in historically underserved regions like the Coast.
