FUNYULA, BUSIA COUNTY – A man from Nabutuki village in Busia County has been arrested over claims he sexually assaulted his nine-year-old niece.

The suspect, aged 44, was taken into custody over the weekend after the young girl reportedly confided in relatives about the alleged abuse.

Police say the incident happened in Funyula Constituency. The girl is said to have identified her uncle as the perpetrator.

“She spoke out and that’s when we acted,” said Samia sub-county police boss, Richard Moracha. “The suspect is now being held at Sio Port Police Station.”

Authorities confirmed that he is expected to appear before the Port Victoria Court in Budalang’i on Monday.

The child is receiving care as investigations continue.

This latest case has added to growing concern in the region about rising incidents of child sexual abuse. It follows closely on the heels of another disturbing case-just two weeks ago, a court in the same area sentenced a local teacher to 25 years in prison for defiling a 14-year-old pupil.

“We’re urging families and communities to speak out and report such cases immediately,” said Moracha, adding that police will continue to take swift action where children are at risk.

Child protection advocates in Busia have repeatedly called for stronger awareness and support systems, especially in rural areas.

No plea had been entered by the suspect at the time of reporting.
