Unbeaten and Unbowed: Matthews Leads NCPB to Fourth Straight Handball Title

Bryan Matthews wore a wide smile as he spoke about his team’s latest triumph.

The National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) head coach had every reason to be proud. His team had just defended their Kenya Handball Federation men’s league title for the fourth time in a row—without losing a single game.

On Saturday, NCPB sealed their unbeaten run with a 33-28 win over fierce rivals Equity Bank in a high-stakes final at Nyayo Stadium.

“It’s a big moment for us,” said Matthews, speaking to Citizen Digital shortly after the final whistle. “We’re working with a young squad—some of them just out of school—but they showed real fight. I’m proud of them.”

The match was a rematch of last year’s Super Cup, where Equity had edged NCPB. But this time, Matthews’ men came prepared.

Attacker Stephen Wanyonyi led the charge with seven goals. His sharp instincts and relentless energy proved too much for Equity’s defence. The team’s spirit was evident as they held firm under pressure and kept their composure when it mattered most.

“We Improved in Every Area”

Matthews credits the win to hard work across the board.

“We focused on building a complete team,” he said. “Our attack was sharper, the defence tighter, and we had four goalkeepers—each bringing something unique.”

That depth, he says, gave them the edge.

Beyond the trophy, Matthews is encouraged by what he sees across the league. The level of play is improving, he notes, and that’s good for the sport in Kenya.

“Each season, teams are getting stronger,” he said. “The federation has done well training coaches. That kind of support lifts everyone.”

NCPB’s title win caps a solid season in which they overcame top contenders with confidence. The team beat other strong sides the weekend before, keeping their eyes firmly on the prize.

Though their league campaign is now over, they’ll be officially crowned champions after the season wraps up next weekend. In the meantime, Matthews and his players are taking a short break before regrouping to chase yet another trophy—the Super Cup.

“Of course, we’ll enjoy this win,” Matthews said. “But we know the journey isn’t over.”

For now, though, they can enjoy a moment that speaks of resilience, teamwork, and a belief that youth—when guided right—can rise to the very top.
