Mohamed Salah Makes Premier League History with Golden Boot and Playmaker Double

LONDON — On a tense final day of the Premier League season, Mohamed Salah did what few believed possible — and made history while doing it.

The Liverpool forward has claimed both the Golden Boot and Playmaker awards for the 2024/25 season, after finishing as the league’s top scorer and leading assist provider. In doing so, he’s become the first player ever to win both honours and the Player of the Season award in the same campaign.

Salah found the net for the 29th time this season in a 1–1 draw against Crystal Palace at Anfield, sealing the Golden Boot with a six-goal lead over Newcastle’s Alexander Isak.

It marks the fourth time Salah has won the Premier League’s top scorer award — equalling the record set by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry.

“It’s something I’ve worked really hard for,” Salah said in a brief post-match interview. “But without the team, none of this happens.”

A Creative Force

Salah didn’t just finish chances this season — he created them too. With 18 assists, six more than Newcastle’s Jacob Murphy, he was also named the league’s top playmaker. That award was only introduced in 2017/18, and Salah has now won it twice.

He previously scooped both the Golden Boot and Playmaker awards in the same season back in 2021/22. Only one other player has ever done the same: Harry Kane in 2020/21.

Long before these official accolades, Andrew Cole (1993/94) and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (1998/99) had also topped both charts — though in an era before the Premier League formally tracked assists as an award category.

A Historic Treble

Saturday’s announcement of Salah as the EA SPORTS Player of the Season made it a clean sweep. He is the first player in Premier League history to win all three major individual honours in a single season.

That puts him in elite company. Only Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nemanja Vidić, and Kevin De Bruyne have won the Player of the Season award more than once. Salah now joins that list.

Alan Shearer praised the Egyptian’s consistency on Match of the Day, saying, “To score and create like that, year after year — it’s the stuff of greats.”

A Record-Matching Finale

Salah’s goal against Palace also brought him level with the all-time record for combined goals and assists in a single Premier League season. His 47 goal involvements matched the totals set by Shearer (1994/95) and Cole (1993/94) — both of whom played in seasons that were four games longer.

“He’s done this in a 38-game season,” noted former England international Joe Cole on Sky Sports. “It’s even more remarkable.”

Balanced Excellence

This season wasn’t just about Salah. Arsenal’s David Raya and Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels shared the Golden Glove, each keeping the most clean sheets. But it was Salah who stood above the rest.

As Liverpool look to rebuild under a new manager next season, Salah’s achievements are a timely reminder of his lasting impact.

“I just try to help the team win,” Salah said. “The records are nice, but the focus is always on the next game.”

With four Golden Boots, two Playmaker awards, and now a historic triple crown to his name, Salah has already written his chapter in Premier League history — and it reads like a legend.
