Kenya has emerged as a finalist to host the prestigious 5th Africa Media Convention in 2026, alongside Ethiopia. The announcement positions Kenya as a key contender, with the official bidding set to take place in Morocco during this year’s convention.
The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) CEO, David Omwoyo, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the bid, highlighting the importance of collaboration between media organisations and the government. Omwoyo stressed that Kenya’s structured approach, involving various media associations, would be central to strengthening the country’s chances.
“The Ministry will lead the effort, with media associations like the Kenya Editors Guild (KEG), Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ), and the Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) playing crucial roles in the media component,” Omwoyo explained during a strategic planning session at the MCK.
Omwoyo also proposed the establishment of a quasi-secretariat at the Council, which would serve as the primary hub for coordination and communication throughout the bidding process.
Eric Oduor, Secretary-General of KUJ, underlined the need for a compelling and technically sound presentation to bolster the bid. He also suggested the early development of a theme for the 2026 convention.
A successful bid to host the Africa Media Convention would be a significant achievement for Kenya, offering numerous benefits. In addition to enhancing the country’s tourism industry, it would provide a platform to showcase Kenya’s vibrant media sector, regulatory frameworks, and emerging technologies.
The planning meeting brought together key stakeholders from various media associations, including KUJ, KEG, and AMWIK, as well as representatives from the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), reflecting the united effort to position Kenya as the ideal host for this influential event.
