Kenya’s National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has launched a significant operation in Narok County, targeting the production and distribution of illicit alcohol. The two-day operation, conducted on May 22 and 23, 2025, focused on the Topoti/Emorogi and Naikara markets, areas known for illegal brewing activities.
Led by Senior Superintendent of Police Nicholas Kosgey, the multi-agency team, which included officers from NACADA, the National Police Service (NPS), and the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), destroyed over 5,000 litres of Kangara, a potent illegal brew, in Topoti/Emorogi. Additionally, 5 kilograms of bhang were seized during the operation. However, no arrests were made as suspects fled upon the arrival of the enforcement teams.
In Naikara Market, the team conducted compliance checks on alcohol outlets, resulting in the destruction of 60 litres of Busaa, another illicit brew. Intelligence reports suggest that the area is flooded with counterfeit products and uncustomed goods, possibly smuggled from neighbouring Tanzania, prompting calls for a more extensive crackdown involving other agencies.
Despite the absence of arrests, the operation has sent a strong message to those involved in the illicit alcohol trade. Residents have expressed support for the crackdown, pledging cooperation with authorities to eliminate the vice from the region. Senior Superintendent Kosgey noted, “The public has been supportive and is willing to assist in future operations.” He further stated, “This is just the beginning more crackdowns will follow.”
The operation is part of broader efforts by NACADA to combat drug and alcohol abuse in the region. Earlier this year, NACADA held sensitization campaigns in major trading centres in Narok County to raise awareness about the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse. The Director in charge of Corporate Services at NACADA, Patrick Obura, emphasized the importance of community involvement in the fight against substance abuse, stating, “We are working with the county government to get more recent data that will inform whether our efforts are bearing fruit.”
As the crackdown continues, authorities have vowed to sustain the momentum, warning that those involved in the illicit trade will face the full force of the law. The operation underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring the well-being of its citizens.
