The government has ordered parents to register all school-going children as dependents on the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) before the start of the third term on August 26.
If you’re a parent or guardian looking to register your child for SHIF, this guide will walk you through the process step by step.
Whether you prefer registering online, through a mobile USSD code, or in person, we’ve got you covered.
1. Introduction to SHIF
Launched on March 1, 2024, SHIF replaces the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) with a more comprehensive health coverage plan designed to cater to all Kenyans. For parents, this means ensuring their children are enrolled to benefit from the available health services under the new system.

Before you begin the registration process, ensure you meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Kenyan Citizenship: You must be a Kenyan citizen or a legal resident.
