Gov’t Orders Parents to Register Children for SHIF Before Schools Open

School

The government has issued a directive for parents to register all school-going children as dependents on the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) before the start of the third term on August 26.

This announcement comes on the heels of the recent enactment of the Social Health Insurance Act 2023, which became law on November 22, 2023.

The government’s push for registration is a key step toward ensuring that every child has access to health coverage through the SHIF.

This move is part of a broader strategy to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) across the nation.

With the introduction of the Social Health Insurance Act 2023, the government has restructured the way health insurance works for students.

SHIF will now replace the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF), but it will retain the Edu Afya identity, which is specifically tailored for school-going children.

How to Register Your Child on SHIF

Parents have multiple options to register their children for SHIF, making the process convenient and accessible. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Online Registration: Visit the official SHIF website at sha.go.ke.
  2. Mobile Registration: Dial *147# on your mobile phone to begin the registration process.
  3. Alternative Website: You can also register through afyangu.go.ke by following the attached registration manual.
