I instantly fell in love with Korean cinema the moment I watched my first film. It’s clear why, given the success of Oscar-winning blockbusters like “Parasite.” Here’s a compilation of Korean drama series that are a must-watch for any newbie looking to join the bandwagon.
The World of the Married
The World of the Married is a romance Korean series, its first episode was released on March 27, 2020. The series is about a deceitful husband who cheats on his wife with the knowledge of all their friends who never inform the wife. The series takes a turn of events when the mistress becomes the wife and the wife the mistress. It’s a film that will have you watching it on repeat.
Kingdom
Kingdom is a thriller Korean film, I have most definitely recommended it to all my friends and they have fallen in love. It is a two-part series released on January 25, 2019, as Netflix’s first original Korean series. The film’s setting is at the beginning of the 17th century when the king is infected by a deadly disease that turns him into a zombie who only awakens in the dark and feeds on human flesh.
The disease spreads when a hunter feeds people a human corpse that was infected unknowingly. This leads to the people dying and coming back as zombies compelling the prince to save them.
100 Days My Prince
100 Days My Prince is a love romance series released on September 10, 2018, with the lead actor Doh Kyung Soo, a member of the famous boy band XO. The film is about a prince who loses his memory after an attack on him that leaves him lost in the woods.
The prince is saved by a poor man who in return lies to him about his identity and makes him marry his daughter after the king’s decree for every spinster to get married to lift the curse of draught.
Extraordinary Attorney Woo
Extraordinary Attorney Woo is a film that was released from June 29 to August 18, 2022. The acting of the star of the film Park Eun-bin is what caught my eye. The storyline is about an autistic girl who becomes a lawyer and navigates the industry as a unique individual. This K-drama sits more as a comfort show that will cheer you up when you are down.
Boys over Flowers
This would not be a proper K-drama recommendation if I did not recommend what is reckoned to be K-drama fan’s introduction film. Boys over Flowers is a 2009 Korean TV series that has a high school setting. Geum Jan-di attends an elite high school full of rich students this leads to her getting bullied by the leader of the F4, a group of the four richest boys at school.
The storyline takes a turn when a love interest starts forming between the two.
