Former Ghana striker Raphael Dwamena has died after collapsing on Saturday during an Albanian Super League match.
The Albanian Football Federation confirmed the death of the 28-year-old.
Video circulating on social media showed the player falling over in the 24th minute of the match between Dwamena’s Egnatia and Partizani.
Despite prompt medical intervention and the efforts of fellow players who rushed to the scene, the federation sadly confirmed the player’s passing.
“Despite the immediate intervention of specialist doctors and all efforts to bring him back to life, the footballer unfortunately passed away,” the federation said in a statement.
The game was halted at 1-1 with no further play.The federation has postponed all games scheduled in Albania this week.

Dwamena held the top scorer position, scoring nine goals in the current Albanian Super League season.
Additionally, he made eight appearances for Ghana, finding the net twice.
In 2017, Dwamena was diagnosed with a heart condition. During a match in Austria in 2021, he collapsed on the pitch but was quickly stabilized.
“He served his country well and showed class anytime he represented Ghana,” Ghana Football Association President Kurt Edwin Simeon Okraku said in a statement.
Dwamena’s career spanned across Spain, Denmark, and Switzerland.
Spanish clubs Levante and Zaragoza also mourned the loss of their former player.
Dwamena joined Levante in 2018, played one season and was later loaned to Zaragoza, where he played in the 2019-20 season.

Zaragoza said on X, “We are devastated by the sad news of the passing of our former player Raphael Dwamena. You will always be in the memory of Zaragoza’s fans. Rest in peace.”
