Four high school kids have been formally charged as adults with murder by Las Vegas prosecutors in connection with the fatal beating of a classmate.

The fight was caught on cell phone video and has been extensively circulated on social media. The two 16-year-olds and the two 17-year-olds are accused of plotting to commit assault and second-degree murder. Multiple children were involved in the fight on November 1 that resulted in the death of Jonathan Lewis Jr., 17, according to Las Vegas police. Thus far, at least eight students in the 13–17 age range have been taken into custody.

Following the hearing, District Attorney Steve Wolfson stated that the evidence indicated the teenager’s beating was not a premeditated act, which is why his office had decided not to prosecute the teenagers with first-degree murder. The four teenagers will continue to be detained without being allowed to post bond. However, on Tuesday, a court granted prosecutors’ and defence attorneys’ joint plea to move the teens from the county jail to the juvenile detention centre, citing their safety.

Lewis passed away following a brawl with his peers in an alleyway close to Rancho High School. Officials stated that ten individuals surrounded him, knocked him down, and started kicking, punching, and stomping on him as soon as the first blow was delivered. Police believe the argument was about a stolen vape pen and a pair of headphones.

Following the altercation, a bystander discovered the boy unconscious in the alley. They brought him to the school, where personnel started CPR. After Jonathan was taken by emergency personnel to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, it was discovered that he had sustained “non-survivable head trauma.”

According to authorities, the victim walked to the alleyway with a friend after school, but investigators believe he wasn’t the intended target of the altercation.
