Zambia’s Rural Electrification Master Plan, launched in 2003, has long been the guiding document for electrification efforts in the country. Yet, insufficient funding had been a chronic issue, until a change in government ushered in a transformative period. With funding now approaching the required $50 million annually, Zambia is poised for a substantial shift in its energy landscape.

In the past times, Zambia has been relying heavily on hydroelectric power generation, primarily harnessed from its abundant water bodies. However, the nation has learned valuable lessons about the vulnerability of this approach to climate change. Erratic rainfall patterns and increased evaporation due to climate change have disrupted water availability, leading to power rationing and load shedding.

A significant challenge lies in weaning over 60% of the population off fossil fuels, particularly charcoal. This transition is essential to reducing carbon emissions and mitigating the impacts of climate change. Zambia’s determination to diversify its energy sources and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels demonstrates its commitment to a greener future.

Zambia’s energy sector is evolving, with plans to diversify power generation and introduce more private players. The Energy Sector Reforms aim to break the monopoly of the public utility company, allowing private entities to participate and invest. A key focus is on shared transmission infrastructure, streamlining energy distribution and promoting competition.

Zambia’s energy expert acknowledges the challenges South Africa faces amid its energy crisis.
