National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi demands for a thorough investigation into the brutal attack on Kirinyaga Woman Representative, Njeri Maina. The incident, which left her seriously injured, has sparked allegations of political involvement, drawing attention to Kirinyaga County Governor Anne Waiguru.

During a fiery Parliamentary session yesterday, National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to turn their focus towards Governor Waiguru.

He highlighted claims that the perpetrators of the attack, who reportedly arrived in three Toyota Probox vehicles, were acting on instructions from the Kirinyaga County government.

Wandayi stated, “We must condemn violence in all its shapes and forms; violence is violence – whether it happens in Kondele or Kerugoya. This atrocity… by the County Governor of Kirinyaga and her agents needs to be investigated very expeditiously, and stern action taken against the financiers and perpetrators of this heinous act.”

Kisii Woman Representative Dorice Donya first raised the issue in the House. Donya alleged that Njeri Maina was attacked by rowdy youths while addressing congregants at a function.

She recounted Njeri’s attempts to inspect a closed water project, which led to the attack allegedly orchestrated by Governor Waiguru’s supporters.

“I was told that she had gone to inspect some water project which had been closed by the Governor… she was badly injured,” Donya narrated.

Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah expressed his desire for a thorough probe to bring the culprits to justice. He assured the House that Njeri Maina was in stable condition, and he called for an exhaustive investigation.

Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie drew from his own experience of political violence, emphasizing the need to uncover the chain of accountability.

“As we dig to find out who these people in Probox were, we also need to find out who has sponsored them, and the accountability has to go to the highest level of this sponsor,” Kiarie asserted.

The drama unfolded at Kerugoya Police Station, where Njeri Maina had accompanied Baragwi MCA David Mathenge to record a statement over allegations of vandalizing a county government water project. The situation escalated as rival political factions clashed, leading to an attack on the Woman Representative.

Chaos erupted when suspected goons, reportedly aligned with Governor Waiguru, disrupted the press conference and attacked supporters of Njeri Maina and the MCA. Stones were hurled, phones were stolen, and tensions flared.

Njeri Maina and David Mathenge, accompanied by their supporters, later found themselves under attack while walking the streets of Kerugoya town. In this second scuffle, Njeri Maina was struck by a stone, sustaining a serious head injury.

She was swiftly taken to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital before being referred to Nairobi Hospital for further treatment.
