People Don’t Actually Care About Climate Change, This is Why

A climate change crisis is looming and even though it may not be as black and white, most parts of the world, especially Europe and Asia are already feeling the effects.

According to a report by NASA, the warming of Earth’s surface and ocean basins as a result of human activity (mainly the combustion of fossil fuels) has continued to affect the planet’s climate. This is built on more than a century’s scientific data that serves as the foundation of contemporary society.

Although climate change is affecting our lives, recent data from the Pew Research Center showed that some Americans still vehemently dispute that the climate is changing. In contrast, others view it as a lower priority. Some of the reasons why people don’t care about the climate are;

  • It is not an Urgent Problem

People are fundamentally more concerned with present-day problems than with distant, long-term worries. This makes it challenging to motivate people to care about climate change, a complex issue with no quick, immediate solutions.

In his article for The Havard Business Review, Markman writes that the most challenging compromise for people to make is between short-term and long-term advantages when taking action on climate change. Years of research on temporal discounting have shown that we overvalue short-term rewards compared to long-term benefits. People don’t save enough money for retirement because they’d rather spend it now than have it later in life. Despite the issues that obesity can lead to in the future, many nonetheless overeat in the present.

The causes and impacts of climate change are varied, making it a complicated problem. It might seem stressful because it can be challenging to comprehend all of the scientific principles involved.

According to science, the fundamental factor influencing climatic change is the quantity of greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide, emitted into and removed from the atmosphere. Unless people feel the effects directly, it can be hard for them to be convinced that the actions they do every day influence the environment in adverse ways.
