Machachari was one of Citizen TV’s classic shows and after its abrupt end back in 2019, the actors had to venture into new projects. Joy Ohon, who was cast as Joy, Almasi’s character baby sister, shared her struggle after the show ended.
Joy shared how her acting career took a turn, after the show ended.. She mentioned that her acting career became stagnant and rejection became a norm for her. Despite being constantly rejected from acting roles, Joy said her family was there to encourage her.
My acting career begun at Machachari before it plateaued. Honestly, dealing with rejection after rejection really demoralized me. My circle and parents however kept encouraging me how talented I am.

On March, Joy took a leap of faith an auditioned for the role of Rubi in the Kenyan drama series, Salem. She shared how she asked her friend to help her record the audition tapes. Luckily, after six attempts, she finally sent one.
Joy narrated that after submitting her audition video and details, she deleted and muted the message. She added that she almost blocked the number but her friend discouraged her from it. She revealed that she tried to protect herself from potential rejection.
I was with my closest friend when I decided to finally record the monologue for Salem. I told her let’s just pray about this before we start. We took over six tapes. I remember giving her the phone to send one clip and delete the message because again, I was not ready for rejection.

Weeks after she auditioned for Salem, Joy got a call informing her that she had gotten the role of Rubi. Joy shared that this new role has changed her perspective on rejection and herself. Joy admitted that the role of Rubi is becoming her alter ego as she embraces her new character.
I will allow rejection to teach me a lesson and not to define me and that every day I will be thankful for the opportunity at Salem. Rubi is a literal gem and she could be my alter ego. Rubi has helped me realize that you don’t have to be a people pleaser and choosing self isn’t selfish.
