After the launch of Worldcoin and the announcement of free 25 Worldcoins (WLD), Kenyans are on a craze to get registered. This has resulted in long lines at the malls and shopping centres where the booths are placed. In addition to that, the Worldcoin team set up at KICC, attracting long lines and people rushing to register.

The team carrying out the registration mentioned that the police told them to stop the exercise and look for a better venue. The long lines of people at the venue were causing obstruction and disrupting other activities.

Hundreds of people who had shown up to get registered were turned away by the police, and the gates to the venue shut.

As part of the registration process, one needs to have their eyes scanned, which will verify that the person is indeed human. After the scan, one is then given a number unique to them. Once someone has registered, they are entitled to receive 25 free Worldcoin tokens, worth roughly Ksh 7000.

ODPC warning on data security

The Office of Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) released a statement pointing out the possibility of the registration posing data insecurity. Despite the warning issued, the lines keep growing longer with more people angling for the free tokens.

“Kenyans are urged to ensure that they receive proper information before disclosing any personal or sensitive data. Individuals are advised to thoroughly inquire about how their data will be used,” Data Commissioner, Immaculate Kassait said.

The company indicated on its website that over 2.1 million people had signed up on Worldcoin across 120 countries as of Tuesday. Over 15 million worldcoin tokens have been claimed by users according to the company.

It says that the project is designed to become the largest human identity and financial network, giving ownership to anyone.
