In a touching partnership showcasing the power of human-animal collaboration, the Colombian military has harnessed highly trained dogs for vital missions.
Among these exceptional skilled dogs is Uber, a Belgian Shepherd training to become a special forces asset for Colombia’s armed forces. At the core of this initiative is the Canine Training School, where dogs like Uber conquer fears through experiences like helicopter rides.
These dogs recruits arrive as puppies and are paired with soldiers for life, developing an unbreakable bond that lasts even into retirement after eight years of service.
Since 1998, about 19,000 dogs have graduated from Colombia’s training schools, each specializing in skills like mine detection and search and rescue. These dogs have transformed the military’s capabilities, providing mobility and psychological support in addition to their physical prowess.

The year-long training involves teaching canines to track human trails and adapt to high-stress scenarios. Wilson, a rescue dog who found lost children surviving in the Amazon Rainforest, is one of the school’s notable graduates.
Colombia’s commitment extends internationally as their trained dogs have helped other nations during disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes. Despite their tough image, these canines have playful spirits, lightening the atmosphere even in intense settings.
