Babies Abandoned on Streets Raises Alarm in Uganda

Troubling news emerges from Kampala as a rising number of babies are being left alone on the city’s streets.

A special home called San New Baby’s Home takes care of these abandoned babies, but the situation is getting worse. Caregivers are worried because more and more babies are being left behind, sometimes in terrible places like garbage piles or even in plastic bags.

Kampala officials reported that there are 20 special homes for kids in the city. Shockingly, the government only runs one of them. At the moment, San New Baby’s Home takes in about 15 abandoned babies every month but unfortunately the home can only accommodate 50 babies at large.

The kind people in charge of the home are pleading for help from any volunteer who can contribute in taking responsibility for the abandoned children. Running the home costs a lot of money, and they depend on donations to keep going. Before the pandemic in 2020, there were not as many abandoned babies, but the number has gone up recently.

This devastating situation happens because some fathers don’t want to take care of their babies, and some young mothers have no option because they don’t have enough money to keep their child. The city is trying to fix this problem by teaching families on how to take care of babies and also by providing some money to sustain the families.
