Three individuals have been arrested in connection with a suspected religious cult originating from Rarieda, Siaya County.

Morris Aloo Oyusu, Elizabeth Awino Ochieng, and Josephine Atieno Omollo were arrested under troubling circumstances involving the neglect of their sick children.

The arrests came after an area chief, alerted by concerned members of the public, took decisive action by contacting the police upon verifying the dire condition of the children.

According to a police report obtained by Citizen Digital, the chief recounted, “After receiving a tip-off from members of the public, I visited the family of one David Owego, who had reportedly refused to seek medical attention for his critically ill children, citing alleged conflicts with the doctrines of his church, the Christo Church.”

Upon entering Owego’s home, law enforcement officers were confronted with a distressing scene.

Four members of the Owego family, including his wife Elizabeth and three young daughters aged 2, 4, and 6, were found in a debilitated state. Shockingly, these family members had refrained from seeking medical help, and the children were suffering as a result.

The police investigation didn’t stop at the Owego residence. The team proceeded to the home of Joseph Omollo, where they encountered a similar heart-wrenching situation.

Josephine Atieno Omollo, his wife, and their two sons, aged 2 and 6, were also found in a comparable dire state, having not received the necessary medical care.

Maurice Aloo Oyusu, another individual linked to this incident, has been arrested for his involvement in offering basic education within an unregistered institution.

This offense goes against sections 76 [1] [2] and 92 [a] of the basic education act, highlighting the complexities surrounding this religious group’s activities.

Elizabeth Awino and Josephine Atieno, both implicated in the neglect of their sick children, face charges under section 16 (7) of the children act no. 29 of 2022.

Josephine’s two-year-old son has been urgently transferred to Madiany Hospital for critical medical attention, while her other child, along with Elizabeth’s children, has been placed in a nearby children’s home, where they will receive the care and attention they deserve.

Police officials have emphasized that Josephine Atieno will be formally charged once her child is discharged from the hospital. They also hinted at the possibility of additional charges being filed as the investigation unfolds, underlining the gravity of this disturbing case.
