As the Women’s World Cup unfolds, the US Women’s National Team (USWNT) has faced criticism over their decision to remain silent during the national anthem.
Only three players were seen mouthing the words to the song at Eden Park in New Zealand on Saturday: Julie Ertz, Alyssa Naeher, and Lindsey Horan.

Naomi Girma, a talented defender who was among those who did not sing along to the National Anthem, gave her view on the backlash and tried to explain why most of the team was mum.

In her response at Monday’s press conference, she said: “I think when we’re out there, we’re preparing for the game and that isn’t the focus( referring to the national anthem). Ultimately, every player has a choice, that’s all I have to say.”
The defending World Cup champions secured a victory in their opening game beating Vietnam 3-0.
But some of their fans are not happy with the national anthem incident.

One Twitter user said: “Absolutely a disgrace. This country has given them so much more opportunities than they would have had anywhere else.”
In a tweet, the former South Carolina governor sent a personal message to the USWNT, reminding them of countless Americans who had laid down their lives for them to be able to do what they do.
“Nice to see a few of them still appreciate the National Anthem! See how many look like they can’t wait for it to be over ” one fan lamented.
The USWNT are next in action on Thursday, July 27, against the Netherlands.
