South Sudanese president promises first elections since independence

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir announced on Tuesday his commitment to holding long-awaited elections, which had been previously postponed and are now slated to take place next year. President Salva Kiir also declared his intention to run for re-election, aiming to extend his tenure as the only president the young nation has known since it gained independence from Sudan in 2011.

Since its independence, South Sudan has grappled with a series of crises, with a fragile government of national unity serving as a tenuous thread holding the country together. This unity government was established following a peace agreement between President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar, both influential figures during the country’s struggle for independence.

Originally scheduled for February 2023 after a transition period, the elections faced setbacks as the government struggled to fulfill crucial clauses of the agreement between President Salva Kiir and Vice President Machar. Notably, the drafting of a constitution, an essential prerequisite for the electoral process, remains incomplete.

President Salva Kiir’s recent commitment to moving forward with the elections signifies his determination to uphold democratic principles and steer the nation towards stability. His decision to seek another term in office reflects his confidence in his ability to lead the country through this critical phase of transition.

“I appreciate the support for my presidential candidacy in 2024,” Mr. Kiir told members of his SPLM party, referring to a “historic event”. “We are committed to implementing the chapters of the refreshed peace agreement and the election will be held in 2024”.

The upcoming elections hold significant importance for South Sudan as they present an opportunity for citizens to actively participate in shaping the country’s future. It is hoped that the electoral process will foster political inclusivity and offer a platform for new leaders to emerge, potentially bringing fresh perspectives and approaches to governance.

However, the path to successful elections remains challenging, requiring the government to overcome various obstacles to ensure a credible, inclusive, and transparent process. Urgent tasks include finalizing the constitution, establishing electoral institutions, and cultivating an environment conducive to free and fair elections.

The international community is expected to play a crucial role in supporting South Sudan’s democratic progress and stability. Regional neighbors, international organizations, and development partners have a vested interest in assisting the government in overcoming challenges and creating an environment conducive to credible elections.
