Kenyan Men Are In Their Soft Girl Era

If you are frequently online, then you have seen the video of Kenya’s very own ASAP Royco. A young Kenyan man who resembles the American rapper ASAP Rocky. He was trending due to his comments when asked how much money he has ever spent on a lady. He went ahead to say that he has spent a maximum of two thousand Kenyan shillings and would not spend anymore. He mentions that he deserves flowers from a lady and to also be given proper treatment from a woman because he is the prize.

This is a major shift after a surge of toxic masculinity was trending last year with men like Andrew Tate being influencers urging men to embrace toxic masculinity which was one of the many reasons he was banned from different social media platforms like Tiktok and Instagram.

Women are daily sharing their experiences of the men in their lives and men they meet expect them to treat them the same way men are traditionally supposed to treat women. Men in this era now want flowers, want to be pursued, want to be texted first, spoilt with gifts among many other things.

Most women both in Kenya and the world at large have called out this absurd behavior from men and have termed it as men in their soft girl era. Basically, an era or stage in a man’s life where he thinks he should receive the same treatment he is supposed to give a woman he is dating and if the woman does not comply he gets upset.

Traditionally, men are supposed to pursue a woman, protect and provide for her while a woman is supposed to receive and nurture. Men in this era are not fully to blame with the rise of feminist women who take up masculine traits and roles and promote statements like, ‘I don’t need a man’. In an era where women are being empowered and not giving men as much attention due to the fact that we have lived in a patriarchal society, men are left to their own devices.
