The closed stations of the expressway were Mlolongo, SGR, and Syokimau toll stations. The statement said that motorists will be allowed to use the expressway as efforts to restore the road continue. The Moja Expressway urged motorists to beware of the possible risks involved while using the expressway during the construction efforts to restore the road.

On Wednesday, protesters demolished the Expressway barrier close to the Mlolongo toll station and destroyed the flower pots that usually line up the road. The damages caused to the expressway were estimated to cost the taxpayer more than Ksh 700 million by the Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Kipchumba Murkomen.

The CS expressed his disappointment as to the aftermath of the protests which rendered the expressway unusable by motorists for a few days. Murkomen further stated that the perpetrators of the acts will be arrested as soon as intelligence services in the country reviewed CCTV footage from the expressway.

The protests were organized by the Azimio One Kenya Coalition in a move that is expected to push the government to lower the cost of living and drop the controversial finance bill of 2023. After last week’s protests caused damage to the expressway, a fresh round of protests has been announced by the Azimio Coalition as they released a statement saying that they will protest for three consecutive days this coming week, that is; Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
