Former Manchester United and Ajax goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is in intensive care after suffering a cerebral haemorrhage (bleeding inside the brain) while on holiday in Croatia.
“Edwin van der Sar has had a bleeding around his brain. He’s currently in hospital in the intensive care unit and is in a stable condition,” Ajax confirmed in a brief statement on Friday.

The 52 year old spent 11 years at Manchester United and left in 2011.

Manchester United wrote the following statement on Friday evening, “Manchester United is holding Edwin van der Sar and his family in our collective thoughts after hearing the news that the legendary goalkeeper has fallen seriously ill.”

Edwin also played for Fulham and Juventus.
He was most recently a CEO at Ajax but quit before the end of last season. This was after the club finished third in the Dutch League and failed to qualify for Champions League for the first time since 2009.

His wife Annemarie also suffered a cerebral haemorrhage in 2009 when he was a player at Old Trafford but made a full recovery.
