The United States places sanctions on South Sudanese Officials on Tuesday over conflict-related rape. Alongside them, there are other two leaders of the Islamic State group.
Following a memorandum signed by Joe Biden ( US president) on conflict-related sexual assault, the treasury justifies this move. They claim that it is warranted by a dedicated US government on dealing with sexual assault during conflicts.
The two Officials were found to have abused their positions for military authority to carry out sexual violence against citizens, the treasury department said. Alongside this, cases of abductions and rape are said to have happened on their watch and by extension, their participation.
South Sudanese Officials namely, James Nando and Alfred Futuyo. The former is the major General in the South Sudanese People’s Defence forces while the latter is the governor of Western Equatoria.

“This decision alongside the Sanctions placed on ISIS leaders, represents the first time that a dedicated focus on conflict-based rape has led to Sanctions.,” said the treasury department.
Due to the sanction, any property the two leaders may have under US jurisdiction has been blocked. In addition to this, they are not allowed to transact with them on any business.
