Schools are complaining that the price of commodities has gone up but the school fees are still the same. They drafted a budget in June last year, but since then, the price of commodities has gone up too high.

The budget they drafted is therefore Insufficient to sustain the school programs. However, they cannot adjust the budget mid-year without the government’s approval.

This reaches a point where suppliers are also struggling to maintain their business causing them to demand for advance payment before supplying the products or essential food items.

School managers on the other hand are caught in a Web between raising fees that parents ought to pay and running more debts under their name. To avoid this, since suppliers will not allow for accumulation of debts, they are contemplating sending children home.

Silas Obuhatsa, the president of the National Parents Association opposed the sending of children home saying, ” Parents are also starving at home. It’s easier to manage pupils in schools than at home. We don’t support the closure of schools before the scheduled calendar date.”

He continued to urge parents with huge fees arrears to complete payment. This would help the school manage to sustain the students longer while they await the disbursement of funds. Moreover, he asks the school to tell the students to eat what is available and doesn’t necessarily have to be alongside the school meal routines.

CS Machogu promised last week that the office would disburse 28 million to schools by last Friday. He however has not responded to calls made to him or referred to the matter since.
