Highlights from President Ruto’s Madaraka Day Speech

President William Samoei Ruto highlighted key achievements and important aspects of Kenya’s journey to freedom and progress during his speech at the 60th Madaraka Day celebrations.

He emphasized the significance of the first Madaraka Day as a symbol of Kenya’s sovereignty, freedom from colonial oppression, and the beginning of the struggle for social and economic freedom.

The President acknowledged the sacrifices made by Kenya’s freedom fighters in their battle for self-determination and drew parallels with the ongoing war against underdevelopment, poverty, and vulnerability.

Despite the challenges, he commended the steady progress made by Kenyans over the past 60 years.

President Ruto praised the distinctively Kenyan spirit of determination, flexibility, pragmatism, and hope that has been instrumental in the country’s struggle for freedom.

He recognized the hard work and resilience of Kenyans from various walks of life, including traders, artisans, farmers, teachers, nurses, and police officers, who contribute to the nation’s progress every day.

He also highlighted the transformation of Kenya’s political landscape, noting the shift from divisive and tribal politics to issue-based discussions and inclusive national debates.

He lauded the peaceful and closely contested 2022 General Election, which focused on important national issues, particularly economic transformation and job creation.

Economic freedom and the empowerment of entrepreneurs were central themes in President Ruto’s speech. He emphasized the importance of supporting micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and facilitating access to credit, markets, and social security.

The President announced the establishment of the Financial Inclusion Fund, also known as the Hustler Fund, which utilizes fintech solutions to provide affordable credit and transform Kenya’s digital economy.

The Hustler Fund, described as revolutionary, aims to support entrepreneurs and overcome barriers to economic growth. Through the fund, Kenyans have accessed digital transactions, totaling 42.5 million, with significant financial support provided to MSMEs.

President Ruto celebrated the success of the fund and its positive impact on Kenya’s fintech community. He also promised Kenyans in the electric Boda boda in September to cushion the bodaboda riders from the skyrocketing petroleum prices.

In addition to economic empowerment, the President addressed the Affordable Housing Programme as a means to stimulate the construction industry and create job opportunities.

He highlighted the importance of local manufacturing, which would be supported by the construction of affordable housing units. The programme aims to create 1 million jobs and enhance export competitiveness while meeting the housing needs of Kenyans.

President Ruto concluded by expressing his pride in Kenya’s achievements and its vision for a more inclusive and prosperous future. He emphasized the role of collective effort, determination, and innovation in shaping the nation’s destiny.
