Speaking at a rally in Georgia this Saturday, the former president denied all of the charges in the indictment. He is charged with storing confidential materials at his Mar-a-Lago residence in a 37-count indictment that was made public on Friday. The indictment alleges that Trump’s mishandling of documents put the country’s security at risk.

According to federal prosecutors, he openly lied about using the top-secret material to “obstruct the FBI and grand jury investigations.” Trump said that the photos presented did not show that the materials at his Mar-a-Lago residence contained classified material.

In his first speech since the charges were made public, Donald Trump went ahead to call out the United States Justice Department and singled out Special Counsel Jack Smith in his statements saying that he was ‘deranged’. Speaking at Georgia’s inaugural Republican Party convention, Mr. Trump remarked:

They’re cheating, they’re crooked, they’re corrupt – these criminals cannot be rewarded, they must be defeated.

He went on to say that the indictment process was marred by corruption and he was innocent of all the charges. It is the first time a former US president has ever faced a criminal investigation.
