The Billie Jean King Cup is a premier international women’s tennis team competition formerly known as the Fed Cup. Kenya will be hosting the competition for the first time after 28 years of waiting, as the last tournament was held in 1995.
The event which will be held on 12th June next week at Nairobi club, will take a weeklong. 12 countries have confirmed participation so far. They include Botswana, Burundi, Ghana, Mauritius, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Seychelles, Tunisia, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
Team Kenya which will include Wimbledon Open double’s junior champion Angela Okutoyi who will compete against other best tennis players in Africa.

“The main goal is to qualify. I want to put a score in the board for my team. We want to clinch the maximum points and make the cut,” Okutoyi said.
Other Kenyans who will be competing includes Okutoyi’s twin sister Roselida Asumwa. Alicia Owegi a confident Kenyan and Cynthia Wanjala who is a student at Mbagathi Road Secondary School.

Kenya is currently ranked in Group III in Africa and a win in this competition will promote them to the Europe/Africa Group II. This will see them play with big stars in the tennis world. Therefore, creating a space for them in the bigger tournaments.
