The recent increase in prices has created commotion through the market, leaving many Kenyans struggling to adjust with the rising cost of essential items.

According to a spot check conducted by Capital Business at various retail stores, the price of a 400-gram loaf of bread has risen from Ksh60 to Ksh70 within a span of one day.

This sudden increase has followed the significant price hike in a two-kilogram packet of sugar, which raised from approximately Ksh350 to Ksh420 last week. Notably, the price of a two-kilogram bag of Kabras sugar reached Sh420, reflecting a staggering rise of approximately Ksh50.

Sugar being a vital ingredient in bread production, plays a crucial role in shaping the final cost of bread. Hence, the escalating price of sugar directly impacts the overall production expenses, ultimately leading to higher prices for consumers.

The prices of these essential food items have reached unprecedented levels, stretching the financial capacity of Kenyan households to the limit.

Additionally, the recent increase in fuel prices has also contributed to the prevailing predicament. The Energy, Petroleum, and Regulatory Authority (EPRA) implemented a substantial increase in fuel prices at the beginning of this month.

Due to the sudden increase of sugar and fuel costs, driving up the price of bread has been triggered intensifying the financial strain on Kenyan consumers. As the cost of living continues to soar, many households find themselves struggling with an increasing burden on their already limited budgets.

In light of these circumstances, various stakeholders are urging authorities to address the issue promptly. Advocacy groups are calling for measures to stabilize the prices of essential commodities, safeguarding the welfare of Kenyans.

In response to the growing concern, Mr. John Mwaniki, a representative of the Consumer Rights Association, emphasized the need for immediate action, stating, “The government should prioritize addressing the soaring costs of essential food items, particularly sugar and bread. It is essential to protect the welfare of ordinary Kenyans and ensure that their basic needs are met.”

As Kenyans navigate these challenging times, it remains to be seen how authorities will address the underlying factors driving the surge in prices. The hope is that concerted efforts will be made to provide relief to struggling households and restore stability to the cost of living, enabling Kenyans to meet their basic needs without undue financial strain.
