Chelsea defender Thiago Silva says the club needs to “stop and put a strategy in place” or risk another difficult campaign next season as they have reportedly ‘held talks’ with ex-Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino and he is one manager in the frame to replace Frank Lampard.

Despite transfer spending under new owner Todd Boehly, Chelsea is 11th in the Premier League and will end this season without a trophy after defeating Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Thiago Silva:

“The manager can only pick 11 from 30-something. That’s tough,” said Silva. “There is always going to be someone upset because not everyone can play.

“We had to increase the size of the changing rooms because it didn’t fit the size of the team,” Silva revealed.

“It’s a difficult moment for the club, with a lot of indecision,” added 38-year-old Silva. “A positive point is that there are amazing players within the squad, but on the other hand there are always players that are going to be unhappy.

“We need to stop and put a strategy in place, otherwise next season we could make the same mistakes.”

American investor Boehly and private equity firm Clearlake Capital completed a £4.25bn takeover of Chelsea in May 2022.

They have spent across the summer and winter transfer windows to amass a first-team squad of 30 players with no success on the pitch.

Chelsea has sacked managers Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter this season, while interim boss Frank Lampard has lost all four matches since taking over for a second spell this month.

It means they are unlikely to qualify for Europe for only the second time in 25 seasons.

Chelsea has reportedly held talks with ex-Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann as part of their search for a new manager with former Spain boss Luis Enrique also in the frame.

“We keep pointing our fingers at the managers, but we need to look inside and see what we are doing wrong and try to change it,” Thiago said.

“When you’re pointing at someone, you have three fingers pointing back to you. “So firstly, we need to look to what we’ve been doing wrong and play more as a team – because we don’t need a hero, we need heroes. “At the end of the season, if we do what we’ve got to do, we’ll be able to at least finish it with dignity.”

Chelsea holds talks with Pochettino over Chelsea job

Chelsea has reportedly ‘held talks with Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino and he is one manager in the frame to replace Frank Lampard.

The Blues have been searching for a new permanent manager since they decided to sack Graham Potter at the start of this month. The ex-Brighton head coach was only at Chelsea for around seven months.

Frank Lampard has returned to the club as interim head coach but he has been unable to improve their fortunes. Under him, they have lost four consecutive games across all competitions.

The ex-Everton manager needed a superb end to the season to remain in charge beyond the end of this current campaign. But given how poorly things are going, it feels inevitable that he will be replaced in the coming weeks.

Julen Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique have been heavily linked with Chelsea of late. But it was reported earlier this week that the latter is ‘no longer a leading candidate’ for the manager’s role at Stamford Bridge.

Sky Sports are now reporting that ‘Chelsea have held initial talks with Pochettino’. They add.

‘It is understood the former Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham coach is one of five candidates at this stage of the process. ‘Chelsea has been admirers of Pochettino in the past and enquired about his availability when Thomas Tuchel left the club in September.

‘Sky Sports News has been told Pochettino will assess his options in the summer as he prepares for the right opportunity.’

The former Tottenham boss has been out of work since he left French giants PSG at the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

He has won the Premier League title with them three times during his previous two spells at the club.

Former Chelsea man Geremi thinks the club’s supporters “would be very happy if he returned”.

“You must understand that Jose Mourinho is a legend in football and at Chelsea. I don’t know what Mourinho is thinking regarding the Chelsea job.

“I think the Chelsea fans would be very happy if he returned to the club. He is a legend of Chelsea that has achieved a lot of success with the club. If you asked him about it, if you asked him if Chelsea were the club of his heart, he would say ‘yes’.

“He loves Stamford Bridge. He won so many titles there and he became a club legend. He knows the fans will welcome him with open arms. Let’s wait and see what happens.

Geremi has also explained why Chelsea’s next boss must have Premier League experience: “I think it’s much easier for a manager to come into Chelsea with Premier League experience because they will know the temperature, the temperament and the environment.”
