Togolese striker and Premier League legend, Emmanuel Adebayor, has announced his retirement from football at the age of 39. In a rather controversial post on Instagram, that is for the Arsenal fans, Adebayor announced his retirement following THAT goal against his former club Arsenal, after which he ran the full length of the pitch to celebrate against the Gunners’ fans.

In a career of 20 years at the top level, Emmanuel Adebayor has scored 97 goals in 241 appearances, playing for Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspurs, and Crystal Palace.

Adebayor was signed by Arsenal from Monaco in 2006 for  £ 3 million (Ksh. 477,156,285.00). He scored 30 goals in the Premier League 2007/08 season bursting into Arsene Wenger’s team.

In the summer of 2009, Manchester City splashed £25 million (Ksh. 3,978,912,375.00) for a five-year contract.

“[My agent] didn’t really say why they wanted to sell me but I found out that they need the money and someone had to leave – that was me,” he said.

“Wenger put me where I am today but he cannot stand up and say last summer I told him I wanted to leave. I told him I wanted to stay. I don’t think our relationship is broken. I think they need the money and need to sell someone. They chose me and they got their money,” Adebayor recalls his departure from Arsenal.

Speaking to The Daily Mail years later, he said that racism had prompted his passionate celebration: “This is the thing. And it is why I have not said anything about racism in the past few weeks.”
