Early Life and Education

Michelle Obama was raised in a blue-collar home on Chicago’s South Side. Her parents, Fraser and Marian Robinson instilled in her the values of hard work, perseverance, and education. Michelle attended Whitney Young High School, a selective public school for gifted students, where she excelled academically and was involved in student government and various extracurricular activities.

After graduating from high school in 1981, Michelle went on to attend Princeton University, where she majored in sociology and African American studies. Michelle distinguished herself as an exceptional student, graduating cum laude in 1985. Following her graduation, she went on to attend Harvard Law School, where she earned her law degree in 1988.

Career and Family

After graduating from Harvard Law School, Michelle Obama moved back to her hometown of Chicago and began working at a law firm. It was here that she met her future husband, Barack Obama, who was a summer intern at the firm. Michelle was initially assigned to be Barack’s mentor, and after some persistence on his part, she agreed to go on a date with him. The rest, as they say, is history.

Michelle Obama left corporate law in 1991 to work in the public sector. She worked briefly as an assistant to Chicago Mayor Richard Daley before starting a nonprofit organization to help train people for careers in public service. In 1996, Michelle became an associate dean at the University of Chicago, where she worked until 2000, when she became the vice president of the University Medical Center.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Michelle Obama is also a devoted wife and mother. She and Barack have two daughters, Malia and Sasha, who were born in 1998 and 2001, respectively.
