The 12th Edition of the Kalasha Awards 2022 will be held on Saturday, December 3. The Kalasha International Film and TV Awards is an initiative by the Kenya Film Commission aimed at promoting a vibrant film industry, regulated and democratic, to encourage a healthy level of competition among filmmakers.

In 2022, 217 films were submitted in 1,204 categories, an increase from 2021’s 149 films in 706 categories. nine new categories have been included in this year’s edition of the Kalasha Awards.

The new categories are; Best Viewer’s Choice(TV Drama), Best Viewer’s Choice ( Feature), Best Supporting Actor in a TV Drama, Best Supporting Actress in a TV Drama, Best Regional Film, Best Documentary (Short), Best Documentary (Feature), Best Makeup and Hair Stylist, and Best Costume Designer.

Noting improvements in the film industry, Valentine Kamau, Kenya Actors Guild and Chairperson of the 2022 Awards Nominations said: “Some films are doing very well in structure and great storytelling. There is the use of good storytelling tools like flashbacks, the story in a story, comedy, poetic irony, use of music, and monologues.”

Actors Blessing Lung’aho(Country Queen) and Sanaipei Tande (Tandala Kina), as well as Scriptwriter and Producer, Abel Mutua are some of the big names in the Nominations.

Celebrated TV Personality, Betty Kyallo’s 13-episode Reality Series, Kyallo Kulture, was one of 23 Showmax Originals and exclusives that have been nominated at the Kalasha Awards 2022.

Showmax Content Specialist in East Africa, Denise Mwende, expressed optimism about the nominations stating, “These 23 nominations are an acknowledgement of the calibre of local content that Showmax continues to put out there. It’s the kind of content that continues to set the bar high, both in storytelling and in offering variety to our subscribers. It’s been a great journey, and we are proud of all our Kalasha nominees at Showmax for their contribution to pushing the industry to the highest standards.”

Kenya Film Commission CEO Timothy Owase announced that the newly included Viewer’s Choice categories will be contested through a public vote.

KFC has partnered with StarTimes ON, an online mobile application that will host the official voting platform.

Mental health awareness, domestic violence, elections, substance and drug abuse, and violence, have been noted as constant themes in Films nominated at the Kalasha Awards 2022.

The Gaming category accepts submissions for E-sports and Video Games. E-sports or electronic sports is organized competitive video gaming whereas a video game is an electronic game that involves
interaction with a user interface or input devices, such as a joystick, controller, keyboard, or motion sensing devices to generate visual feedback.

The two games nominated this year are;

  • Money game by Anne Kimani
  • Adventures of Mchupa by  Gathukia Mwangi

Nominations for the 12th edition of the Kalasha International Film and TV Awards began on August 24 and were completed on October 30. To qualify, all TV entries must have been on the air for at least seven episodes before October 2022.
