Qatar Airways showcased its first-ever Metahuman Cabin Crew, QVerse, a novel virtual reality (VR), for the first time in Africa at the Magical Kenya Expo.
The three-day expo that concludes today Friday, October 7, Brought together industry partners from some of Kenya’s key sources markets in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas.
The award-winning airline introduced ‘Sama’ – whose name is of Arabic origin and translates to ‘sky’, that offers an interactive customer experience through engagement with the user, taking them on a virtual journey of discovery, while presenting the unique features in both the Business and Economy Class cabins through a narrated script.
While at the Expo, Vice President of the Airline, Hendrik Du Preez, pointed out the airline’s growth in modern technology and the immense resources now available. Users can now virtually tour and navigate the Premium Check-in area at Hamad International Airport at their convenience.
“We are the first airline to launch it globally, it is a great leap into the future for people to experience our product even before being on board, with Meta being the future, it is important to be in that space and people have an expectation to know what to expect,” Preez said.

The experience was developed using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine, the world’s most advanced real-time 3D creation tool, and MetaHuman Creator, a cloud-based app for creating high-fidelity digital humans.

Qatar Airways was voted the World’s Best Airline for a record seventh time at the 2022 World Airline Awards, winning the prestigious Airline of the Year 2022 title.
The airline noted that by using their own Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs), users can virtually tour the cabin interior of the airline’s aircraft, including the award-winning Business Class – Qsuite, and the Economy Class cabin.
Preez further added that the aviation industry was greatly affected by Covid-19 over the past 2 years but the airline created an opportunity by never stopping operations across the world and has opened eight destinations in Africa during Covid and reopened four destinations that were not in operation 2017.
