Veteran actor Ainea Ojiambo has explained why he typically lands the bad guy character in the shows for which he is selected.

From his early appearances in Makutano Junction, Nairobi Half Life, and Demigods to his more recent performances as the shady detective Juma doing Nana Tandala’s (Sanaipei Tande) bidding in the telenovela Kina and the corrupt prison warden Musa in the thriller series Igiza.

Ojiambo’s most recent appearance is in the political thriller series County 49, where he plays Okusimba Sibi, also known as Ox, the ousted governor of Bwatele County.

Ox portrays a prototypical African politician who is charismatic, profoundly dishonest, incredibly popular with his followers, and just capable of establishing a dictatorship if given the chance.

Ojiambo claims that while the role is difficult for many actors to play, most filmmakers think he is a suitable fit for it.

“Most directors think that I’m able to portray such characters so well, and you know what they say, If you can play a bad guy then you must be one of the best because playing a good guy is easy. Everybody can do it,” Ojiambo says.

However, the actor hopes to play a variety of characters in upcoming TV shows and films, specifically seeking to move into romance roles.

“I think next time, I’ll go for an Alejandro type of character, a romantic guy so that I can show people I can also do romance, the kind of role that will make people cry when they see me frustrated in love,” he says.

Since County 49 features a lot of action and gunfights, Ojiambo, a licensed gun owner, shared his knowledge of weapons with the cast while County 49 was being filmed. He also taught them how to handle firearms.
