Extra-Time: Schools to open on August 18, Magoha anounces

CS Magoha orders for schools to close

Education Cabinet Secretary, George Magoha, has for the second time extended the period basic education learning institutions will remain closed, pushing the re-opening date to Thursday, August 18 instead of Monday, August 15.

The government’s decision to push forward schools’ opening date is to allow more time for IEBC to complete tallying of ballots at the Bomas of Kenya headquarters.

“Following the conduct of our National Elections on Tuesday, August 9, the process of tallying of ballots is still ongoing. Therefore, following further consultations, I hereby convey the Government’s decision on the suspension of the reopening of all basic learning institutions with effect from Monday, August 15, until Thursday, August 18,” the press dated Saturday, August 13, read.

The presidential results have taken longer than most expected making it impractical for learning institutions to re-open before the Election process was complete.

The Election has boiled down to a two-horse race with Azimio flagbearer Raila Odinga and UDA presidential candidate William Ruto going toe-to-toe for the top seat.

Magoha had already pushed forward the resumption date as learners were initially expected to report back to school on August 11, two days after the Election.

“We have been informed that the process of tallying ballots may still be ongoing on the aforementioned date, therefore, following further consultations,” Magoha said in the previous statement.

The Education CS apologised for any inconvenience resulting from the changes and reassured Kenyans the decision was in the best interest of students.

The delay in tallying is likely owing to technical hiccups and delays in the voting process as well as reports of some irregularities.

Observers have noted there was generally peaceful voting except for some isolated incidences of violence in some parts of the country.
