The Myrkl pill, which is intended to break down alcohol in the body following a night of heavy drinking, is currently available in the UK at £30 (Ksh4, 300) for a pack of 30 capsules.

According to yesterday’s results from Nation, the pill is taken in double doses and is advised to be taken one hour prior to drinking for maximum effects.

The first pill breaks down 70% of the alcohol consumed within an hour, alleviating symptoms.

On taking the first capsule, however, it remains effective for up to 12 hours, therefore there is no need for taking it as prescribed (2 pills per day after and before alcohol intake).

According to the findings, those who drank two glasses of wine and took the supplement before drinking had 50% less alcohol in their blood 30 minutes later and 70% less after 60 minutes, reducing the impact on the body significantly.

The Swedish medical company De Faire Medical (DFM) took 30 years to research and develop the formula.

“Marking the first time in history that a consumer product is demonstrated to effectively and rapidly break down alcohol in the body,” said Håkan Magnusson, the Chief executive officer at Myrkl.

The pill’s purpose, according to Magnusson, is to help regular drinkers wake up feeling their best, regardless of their job or social life, but it is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women or anyone under the age of 18.

He however made note that the “pre-drinking pill” as it has been branded, is not designed as an excuse for people to drink beyond their limits.

“This is not a product for the person who wants to go out and drink to excess, the way the pill works. It increases the breakdown of alcohol and therefore reduces the amount absorbed into your system. So you will still get some absorption and some of that jolliness that you experience when drinking alcohol. But not the awful feeling,” says the study.

The pill has been independently tested and clinically proven to work as well.

It is 100% natural and vegan and is made up of high-performing bacteria called Bacillus coagulants and Bacillus subtilis.
