This year, Nikhil managed to move a rank higher from his performance in WRC Safari Rally 2021 claiming the 18th position compared to his 21st in the 2021 edition.

He is currently the only paraplegic driver in the 2022 World Rally Championship (WRC) series.

Nikhil was ecstatic at having managed to finish one spot shy of the podium in what is considered to be the World Rally Championships’ most challenging course.

“I am over the moon with delight for achieving this fete in the toughest rally in the world. We have improved from last year and that’s an objective my navigator Deep Patel and I had set for ourselves at the beginning of the rally.  We hope to replicate the same come 2023,” he said while speaking at the prize-giving ceremony led by President Uhuru Kenyatta, in Naivasha.

The bank pumped KSh 100 million into this year’s Safari Rally with an aim of giving local drivers an opportunity to compete on a global stage.

As previously reported, Maxine Wahome made history by becoming the first woman to win a round in the WRC3 division of the WRC.

The 26-year-old Kenyan finished 16th overall, one position behind M-Sport Rally1 driver Gus Greensmith, and won the WRC’s third-tier class clocking 25 minutes and 27 seconds.

Given that Wahome had previously driven a Subaru Impreza N12 in the African Rally Championship, this was her first race in the M-Sport-built Ford Fiesta Rally3 car, making her victory all the more noteworthy.

Wahome did not realize that when she started her motorsport career in June 2021, her foray into the pinnacle of rallying in Kenya would come with good news just 12 months later.
