Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has been unveiled as the preferred presidential candidate of The Equitable Party (TEP), giving his 2027 bid a formal political platform.
Sifuna was presented as the party’s presidential candidate during an event in Nairobi on Sunday, October 4, as he moves to build a political structure around his Linda Mwananchi Movement (LMM).
TEP party leader Gilbert Marava said the party would restructure its leadership to accommodate Sifuna and his supporters.
“On our end, we have decided to restructure, and in the process, those who registered will stay, and we will bring in our brothers,” Marava said.
He said Sifuna would take over the party’s leadership and contest the presidency on its ticket.
“Sifuna is going to run for president, and he will be the next leader of the Equitable Party (TEP),” Marava added.
The arrangement gives Sifuna an established party platform through which he can organise his supporters and prepare for the electoral process.
LMM moves towards party politics
Sifuna has been building the LMM as a political movement outside the main party structures.
The senator has increasingly positioned himself as a presidential contender ahead of the 2027 General Election. The decision to use TEP provides the movement with a formal party structure as the election approaches.
The development follows weeks of political activity surrounding Sifuna’s presidential ambitions and the search for a party platform.
Leaders attend Nairobi unveiling
The event brought together several political figures, including Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and former Law Society of Kenya president Faith Odhiambo.
Also present were MPs Babu Owino of Embakasi East, Anthony Kibagendi of Kitutu Chache South, Majimbo Kalasinga of Kabuchai, Jack Wamboka of Bumula, Patrick Simiyu of Cherangany and Clive Ombane Gisairo of Kitutu Masaba.
Their presence underlined the political interest surrounding Sifuna’s new platform.
New chapter after ODM fallout
The launch marks a new political chapter for Sifuna following his fallout with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), where he previously served as secretary-general.

TEP now becomes the formal party vehicle for his presidential ambitions, as political leaders across Kenya continue positioning themselves and their parties ahead of the 2027 election.
