Expressway Traffic Alert: Moja Announces 40-Hour Expressway Diversion From Saturday

Motorists to navigate Waiyaki Way in Westlands, where CBD-bound traffic will be diverted during scheduled Nairobi Expressway maintenance works.

Motorists travelling from James Gichuru Junction towards Nairobi’s Central Business District will face a temporary traffic diversion from Saturday evening as MOJA Expressway begins maintenance works on the elevated Westlands overpass.

The works are scheduled to begin at 8pm on Saturday, September 19, 2026, and run until noon on Monday, September 21, according to a traffic advisory issued by MOJA Expressway on Friday.

During the maintenance period, motorists travelling towards the CBD from the James Gichuru Junction direction will not be allowed to use the elevated overpass deck.

Motorists to navigate Waiyaki Way in Westlands, where CBD-bound traffic will be diverted during scheduled Nairobi Expressway maintenance works.

Instead, they will be diverted to the lower A8 road along Waiyaki Way to continue their journey towards the city centre.

MOJA Expressway has, however, clarified that the Westlands Expressway entrance will remain operational throughout the maintenance period.

The temporary restriction is specifically targeting the elevated overpass used by CBD-bound motorists approaching from the James Gichuru direction.

Outbound motorists exiting the Nairobi Expressway towards the overpass are also expected to resume normal operations from 5pm on Saturday, September 19, ahead of the maintenance works taking effect at 8pm.

MOJA Expressway has urged motorists using the affected route to plan their journeys in advance and allow additional travel time, particularly given the already busy traffic conditions along Waiyaki Way.

Traffic marshals will be deployed along the affected section to guide motorists during the temporary diversion, with drivers advised to follow instructions on the ground.

The latest disruption comes as motorists continue to experience traffic challenges along the Westlands-Waiyaki Way corridor following previous road and expressway works.

Earlier in September, motorists reported lengthy delays along Waiyaki Way after an overpass closure and diversion around the ABC Place-Red Hill Road junction.

With the latest maintenance works expected to affect CBD-bound traffic over the weekend, motorists travelling from James Gichuru, Westlands and surrounding areas have been advised to factor the diversion into their travel plans.

MOJA Expressway has apologised for the inconvenience caused by the temporary traffic arrangement and thanked motorists for their cooperation.
