Kenya’s debate over academic credentials has returned to the spotlight.
The latest controversy centres on Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa. His university qualifications have been questioned after a registrar said his name could not be found in certain alumni records.
The issue has placed Barasa among several politicians whose academic histories have faced public or legal scrutiny.
Didmus Barasa’s qualifications questioned
On September 14, Aggrey Wanyama, the registrar of academic affairs at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, wrote to the Consumer Federation of Kenya.
The letter reportedly stated that Barasa’s name was missing from the university’s alumni records.
It also questioned the authenticity of an Electronic Engineering certificate linked to the MP. The registrar further said the university did not hold a graduation ceremony in May 2008.
The claims have not ended Barasa’s academic journey.
In June, he announced that he had completed a PhD in Public Administration at Murang’a University of Technology. He later defended his record amid questions over his qualifications.
Barasa has also maintained that he holds two undergraduate degrees and two master’s degrees.
Conflicting official biographies
Further questions have been raised by changes in Barasa’s official biographies.
An earlier National Assembly profile listed an engineering degree from JKUAT and a master’s degree from the University of Queensland in Australia.
A later version omitted those qualifications.
It instead listed a diploma from the Kenya Power and Lighting Training School and a degree in Public Administration from Mount Kenya University.
The differing records have added to the uncertainty surrounding his academic background.
Barasa has remained defiant. In August, he said he had completed his PhD and thanked his family for supporting him through his studies.
Johnson Sakaja’s university degree
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has faced similar questions. In 2022, the Commission for University Education revoked recognition of his degree from Team University in Uganda.
The commission said there was no evidence showing that Sakaja had studied for the qualification. The decision became part of a wider debate over how political leaders obtain and present academic credentials.
Hassan Joho’s KCSE certificate
Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho also faced scrutiny over his education. The Kenya National Examinations Council alleged that his KCSE certificate had been forged.
Questions were also raised in Uganda over whether his degree from Kampala University had followed the required academic process.
The matter later reached the courts. In 2018, a Mombasa High Court judge dismissed the case. The ruling found that investigators had violated Joho’s rights. The decision brought the prosecution to an end.
Oscar Sudi’s forgery case
Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi faced nine forgery charges linked to an alleged fake KCSE certificate and KNEC diploma. The case became one of the most closely watched academic disputes involving a Kenyan politician.
In 2024, Sudi was acquitted. The court found that the prosecution had failed to prove its case. The ruling meant that the allegations did not result in a criminal conviction.
Granton Samboja’s university records
Former Taita Taveta Governor Granton Samboja also faced questions over his academic papers. Kenyatta University maintained that he had not been enrolled there.
Court records later repeated the university’s position that the certificates in question were forgeries. However, the case was dismissed on jurisdictional grounds.
It was therefore not resolved through a full determination of the allegations.
Mithika Linturi’s Indian degree
Former Meru senator Mithika Linturi faced a dispute over an Indian degree used for admission to the University of Nairobi. The university challenged the qualification.
However, the High Court later ruled that the university’s action was unlawful. Linturi has nevertheless faced continued questions over the original certificate.
The controversy has remained part of the wider debate over academic verification in public life.
Ferdinand Waititu’s qualification
Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has also been drawn into the debate. His qualification from Punjab University was challenged in court.
Petitioners raised questions about differences between the name on his degree and the name on his identity documents. The case added another chapter to Kenya’s long-running discussion about the academic records of political leaders.
A wider question over verification
The disputes have involved different institutions and different legal outcomes. Some cases have ended in acquittals. Others have been dismissed on procedural grounds.
In some instances, university recognition has been withdrawn. In others, questions have remained unresolved. The cases underline the importance of clear academic records.
They also show why claims about qualifications must be tested through official documents, university records and due legal process.
For now, the questions surrounding Barasa’s credentials have added fresh pressure to a debate that has followed Kenya’s political class for years.
