Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi has urged President William Ruto to put preparations for the anticipated El Niño rains ahead of political activities, warning that poor planning could leave Kenyans facing greater hardship.
Muturi said the expected weather threat required direct presidential leadership and close coordination between national and county governments.
He called on President Ruto to oversee preparations personally rather than allow political mobilisation and rallies to take priority.
Kenya is already facing challenges in agriculture, food security and health services, Muturi said. Heavy rains and flooding could place further pressure on communities and public services.
He warned that the government should act before the rains cause widespread disruption.
“The Government should not wait for hospitals to be overwhelmed, crops to be destroyed or families displaced before taking action,” Muturi said.
He called for high-risk areas to be identified and emergency resources prepared in advance. Government agencies responsible for disaster response, he added, should also confirm that they are ready to respond.
“This must be an operational plan—not another press statement, political rally or promise,” Muturi said.
His comments come as attention turns to the possible effects of heavy rainfall on roads, farms, health facilities and livelihoods, particularly in areas that are prone to flooding.
Muturi also argued that political activity should take a back seat when there is a foreseeable threat to public safety.
“The campaign can wait. Kenya cannot. The political season can wait. The safety of Kenyans cannot,” he said.
The remarks put pressure on the administration to demonstrate that contingency plans are in place before the rains arrive. The government has yet to respond directly to Muturi’s criticism in the remarks provided.
