President Donald Trump has called for NBC News journalist Kristen Welker to face possible punishment from the US Federal Communications Commission after she described the record of his political endorsements as “mixed”.
Trump made the demand on Sunday in a post on Truth Social, accusing Welker of deliberately misrepresenting his influence over Republican primary contests ahead of November’s midterm elections.
The president said Welker should be reported to the FCC for what he called a “purposeful inaccuracy”.
Trump also urged FCC Chairman Brendan Carr to take the matter seriously.
The confrontation adds to a long-running dispute between the president and the news media, and comes as Trump’s administration continues to challenge broadcasters and news organisations it considers hostile to his agenda.
Trump disputes Welker’s assessment
Welker, the moderator of NBC’s Meet the Press, had been discussing Trump’s role in Republican primary races during a live appearance on NBC’s Washington affiliate before Sunday’s programme.
She said Trump had backed a number of candidates and had achieved “some mixed results”.
Trump strongly rejected that assessment.
He argued that his endorsed candidates had performed far better than Welker suggested. In his social media post, he cited success rates of 100 per cent for Senate candidates and 98 per cent for House candidates.
Trump said his endorsement record was among the strongest in political history.
He accused what he described as the “Radical Left News” of repeatedly attacking him and his political movement.
NBC stands by its journalist
NBC News defended Welker after Trump’s criticism.
“Kristen is one of the best in the business and we stand by her,” the network said in a statement.
The FCC had not immediately commented on Trump’s demand.
The dispute centres on a question that goes beyond one journalist’s description of Trump’s political record: how far a federal regulator should go in policing news coverage on broadcast television.
The FCC regulates broadcasters and issues licences to local television and radio stations. But its authority over news content is limited, particularly where complaints concern viewpoints or alleged bias.
The First Amendment also places significant restrictions on government interference with journalism.
Limits on the FCC’s power
Experts and legal analysts have questioned whether the FCC has the authority to punish a journalist simply because a president considers a statement inaccurate or unfair.
The commission itself has generally maintained that it does not act as a referee over the accuracy or political viewpoint of ordinary news coverage.
That distinction is important because the FCC primarily regulates broadcast licensees rather than individual reporters.
The agency’s role has nevertheless become a growing source of political controversy under Trump’s administration, with broadcasters facing increased scrutiny and legal challenges over regulatory action.
Trump has previously attacked major news organisations and sought action against broadcasters whose coverage he considers unfair. Several media companies have challenged such efforts in court, arguing that government pressure on news organisations can threaten constitutional protections for freedom of speech and the press.
A relationship already under strain
Trump’s latest attack comes after a series of tense encounters with Welker.
In June, Welker interviewed Trump for Meet the Press in an exchange that ended abruptly. The interview covered Iran, the economy and domestic politics, among other issues.
The interview was closely watched and later prompted extensive fact-checking of several claims made by the president.
Welker has continued to interview Trump despite the often combative exchanges.
The latest dispute, however, shifts the confrontation from a disagreement between a president and a journalist to a direct call for regulatory intervention.
For NBC, the episode is another test of its relationship with the White House as the political campaign for the November midterm elections gathers pace.
For Trump, it is another public challenge to a news organisation he believes has treated him unfairly.
Whether the FCC takes any action remains unclear. But the dispute has once again placed the boundaries between presidential power, broadcast regulation and press freedom at the centre of the political debate.
