Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-Kenya) leader Eugene Wamalwa has called for the cancellation of a controversial tender for new police uniforms, saying the government should instead focus on police reforms and better pay for officers.
Speaking in Kwale County on Sunday during a church service at PAG Diani and the opening of a DAP-Kenya office in Kinondo, Wamalwa questioned the government’s decision to prioritise new uniforms.
Wamalwa said Kenyans were looking for meaningful changes within the police service, rather than new uniforms.
“We need police reforms, not new uniforms,” he said, while calling for better remuneration and working conditions for police officers.
He also alleged that the multi-million-shilling tender was designed to benefit individuals within government. He did not provide evidence to support the allegation.
Former CS criticises government over taxes
The former Cabinet secretary also criticised the government over what he described as punitive taxation of traders.
He condemned the use of tear gas against Nairobi traders who had taken to the streets to protest against high taxes.
Wamalwa said the government should address the concerns of traders instead of using force against them.
Wamalwa also condemned attacks involving Linda Mwananchi leaders James Orengo and Babu Owino in Migori.
He called on authorities to allow political parties and political formations to campaign freely and peacefully across the country ahead of the 2027 General Election.
His remarks come as political activity gathers pace ahead of the election, with opposition figures increasingly challenging the government’s record on policing, taxation and political freedoms.
