The family of KCB Bank Group executive Rosemary Chemutai Koech has spoken of marital and financial difficulties she was facing before her death at her home in Ngong, Kajiado County.
Koech, 40, was found dead at her residence in the Ole Nairi area on Friday, August 21, 2026.
A post-mortem examination conducted by Chief Government Pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor at Lee Funeral Home determined that she died by suicide. Detectives and family members were present during the examination.
According to her family, Koech had been dealing with difficulties in her marriage and had complained about the pressure of servicing debts.
Police said she was found hanging from a bedroom window at her home in Kaiyet Close. A caretaker told investigators that relatives forced open the bedroom door after she failed to respond to calls and knocks.
Officers processed the scene but did not recover a suicide note. Her body was later taken to Lee Funeral Home for examination.
The circumstances surrounding her death have prompted grief among her family, colleagues and members of Kenya’s technology and digital rights community.
Koech was the Head of Data Protection at KCB Bank Group, a position she took up after joining the bank in June 2022 as a Data Protection Officer. She was promoted to head the function a year later, taking responsibility for data protection compliance across the group.
Before KCB, she worked at Safaricom as a Public Policy Manager. She had earlier held legal, regulatory and public policy positions in Kenya’s technology sector.
Her career also extended into technology policy and digital rights. She served as a trustee of the Kenya ICT Action Network, or KICTANet, and was Principal of the Kenya School of Internet Governance. She also chaired multi-stakeholder advisory groups linked to the Kenya and East Africa Internet Governance Forums.
KICTANet was among the organisations that mourned her death, remembering her contribution to technology policy, internet governance and digital rights.
Her family has asked the public to keep her four children in their thoughts and prayers as they come to terms with her death.
The family’s account of her struggles comes as police continue to document the circumstances surrounding her death. No evidence has been publicly presented suggesting that anyone else was responsible.
