Andrew Amonde has confirmed that he is no longer part of the Kenya Sevens technical set-up, ending his short stint with the national team as he turns his attention to KCB RFC.
Amonde spoke after KCB edged Black Blad 10-7 in the Kabeberi Sevens quarter-finals on Sunday. The result sent the defending champions into the semi-finals, where they will meet Harlequins.
The coach said he had only recently learnt of the decision by the Kenya Rugby Union to end his appointment.
“It’s unfortunate. I will not be part of Kenya Sevens after parting ways with the Union. Now my focus is with the team, KCB, and giving them full attention to see how much we can grow,” Amonde said.
The union terminated his appointment through a letter dated August 9. The decision was linked to a contractual provision that prevents national team coaches from holding similar coaching roles at club level.
Amonde had been working as a strength and conditioning coach with Shujaa, alongside head coach Kevin Wambua and assistant coach Louis Kisia. He had also recently earned his World Rugby Level II coaching qualification.
He declined to engage in a dispute over whether the termination was legally justified.
“Whether it was legal or illegal, rugby is a sport played on the field and not in the courts. It’s not something that’s in my DNA,” he said.
The former Kenya Sevens captain acknowledged that combining his responsibilities with KCB and the national team had been demanding.
“Coaching KCB is not easy either, especially with 15s and 7s. Having that free time with KCB will enable me to focus,” he said.
Amonde said the decision had disappointed him, but he had received encouragement from friends and partners as he adjusted to the change.
He also left the door open to helping Shujaa in the future if his experience is needed.
“I’m still part of Kenya Sevens. If my input is required, I will be able to chip in.”
For now, his attention is firmly on KCB. The club is seeking to defend its Kabeberi Sevens title while building a side capable of competing in both rugby sevens and the 15-a-side game.
