NAIROBI — On a calm Sunday at State House, Nairobi, football and politics briefly shared the same spotlight. Gor Mahia Football Club, fresh from another dominant season, walked into the President’s official residence carrying the Kenyan Premier League trophy.

They did not leave with it.

Instead, they presented it to President William Ruto in a ceremony that blended celebration with symbolism a recognition, they said, of the club’s success and its place in the country’s sporting story.

The visit came after Gor Mahia secured their 22nd league title, further extending their record as one of Kenya’s most successful football teams. The club’s delegation included officials, technical staff and players, all gathered to mark a season they described as hard-earned and defining.

President Ruto congratulated the team, praising what he called their consistency across the campaign. He credited their success to discipline and determination, and commended the wider football community for sustaining competitive momentum in the league.

“Your achievement reflects discipline, resilience and hard work throughout the season,” he said, according to officials present at the event. He also acknowledged the club’s supporters and management, saying their collective effort had helped maintain Gor Mahia’s long-standing dominance in local football.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed also addressed the gathering. He praised the club’s performance and the standard it set during the season.

He confirmed that the champions would receive Sh15 million from a total prize pool of Sh20 million, describing the award as recognition of a campaign marked by consistency and strong competition across the league.

“All clubs that participated deserve credit for raising the level of competition,” he said, adding that the season had been closely contested despite Gor Mahia’s clear edge at the top.

The ceremony underscored the club’s enduring place in Kenyan sport. Founded decades ago, Gor Mahia’s history is marked by domestic dominance and periods of continental ambition. Their latest title adds another chapter to that legacy, one that continues to shape expectations in Kenyan football.

For a moment at State House, the trophy stood not just as silverware, but as a reminder of how sport, success and national pride often meet in public view.
