Abel Mutua still remembers the moment his body finally gave in.

The Kenyan actor, scriptwriter and storyteller widely known to fans as “Mkurugenzi”, says he collapsed naked on the bathroom floor during one of the busiest periods of his career, exhausted by a punishing workload and the pressure of providing for his young family.

What followed, he now says, became one of the most important turning points of his life.

At the time, Mutua had recently become a first-time father and was trying to balance multiple demanding roles in Kenya’s television industry. He was acting as Freddie in Tahidi High while also writing scripts for both Tahidi High and Mother-in-Law.

The schedule was relentless. According to Abel, long nights and constant deadlines had become normal. He pushed himself harder each day, convinced that slowing down was not an option.

Then came the collapse. Speaking in past interviews about the incident, Mutua recalled waking up in hospital after his housekeeper found him unconscious in the bathroom. His wife had already left for work, leaving the housekeeper as the only other person at home.

“Success means nothing if you lose yourself chasing it.” Abel Mutua says collapsing from exhaustion became the wake-up call that changed his life and career forever.

“She saved my life,” Mutua has said in previous interviews while reflecting on the ordeal.

The incident forced him to confront the physical and emotional cost of overworking himself.

While receiving treatment, a nurse offered advice that stayed with him long after he left hospital. Mutua recalled being told that the world moves on quickly, even after tragedy, and that no job was worth sacrificing his life for. The words struck a nerve.

After spending about a week on bed rest, Abel Mutua said he began reassessing his approach to work, family and personal health. The experience eventually pushed him to slow down and make changes to his career pace.

Over the years, Mutua has become one of Kenya’s most recognised storytellers, building a loyal audience through film, digital content and live storytelling sessions. But behind the success, he says, was a painful lesson about burnout and the pressure many young professionals place on themselves.

His story has since resonated with many Kenyans navigating demanding careers and rising economic pressures, especially young parents trying to secure stability for their families.

Today, Abel Mutua often speaks openly about balance, mental wellbeing and the importance of rest; lessons born from a frightening moment on a bathroom floor that nearly cost him everything.
